So, Monty and I had a few rough days/nights last week and I was at the point that I would try just about anything to get him to sleep for longer then the 30 minutes to an hour that he was sleeping for. So, in my desperation the other night I gave him the a Binky that I had. It turned out to be too big for him and was of zero use to me that night.
From the beginning I was against using a Binky. I truly believed that it would mess both Monty and I up with our breastfeeding routine, and that if you just never gave a baby a Binky - that they would never know what they were missing.
This all leads me to my confession. Out of fear that my nights would continue without sleep, I went out and bought a Binky, that was age/size appropriate and decided that my next desperate moment he would get to try out his new Binky.
So, last night came around and I put him in bed around 8:30. At 9:00 he woke up, I gave him his Binky and what-do-ya-know? It worked!! He went right back to sleep. It of course fell right out a few minutes later, but he didn't notice. He ended up waking up at 9:30, and I went ahead and fed/changed him and laid him back down. FIVE and a half hours later, I woke him up to feed him again. That sleep was followed by another FOUR hour stretch of which I had to wake him up again.
He doesn't really like it, if you just give it to him for no reason. But last night I think it kept him from getting too worked up and kept him calm enough to fall back asleep. I didn't use it, but the once when I knew he didn't need to be changed and that he didn't need to eat. It might just be the trick that this desperate (but now well-rested) mom needed.
