7:00 - 8:00 AM
I answered questions, settled in and "got ready" for the big day.
8:00 - 9:00 AM
Our first step of action was to get an IV, so that they could start giving me Pitocin to start up my contractions. This was a major set back. It took the nurse, head nurse and specialist a grand total of 6 trys and a little over an hour to get the IV in me!!! I must say, it was horrible - after the "specialist" couldn't get the IV in, I was ready to just go home. BUT, they eventually figured it out, and I started receiving my Pitocin soon after.
9:00 AM - Noon
I started having mild contractions, walked around the hospital (with baby monitors and IV trailing a short distance behind), sat on the birthing ball, played cards etc. I was feeling pretty good about myself at this point, and can even remember thinking - contractions aren't that bad - I can TOTALLY do this without an epidural. At this point I was about 4 cm dilated.
Noon - 2:00 PM
I still wasn't in much pain, and was able to walk the hallways and sit on the birthing ball. The nurse had then decided to have my doctor break my water for me to get the process moving a little quicker. Well my doctor, didn't make it in time. I got off the birthing ball so the nurse could see how far I was dilated and - SPLAT...Wooshhh - there went my water as I was standing up.
2:00 - 3:30 PM
I went from four, maybe five centimeters dilated to TEN centimeters dilated!!!! The contractions came on full force and went into high gear to get little Monty out! I asked for an epidural around six centimeters, but by the time I was able to receive it, I was already eight cm, they went ahead and gave it to me, only to tell me after it was in, that they couldn't give me a full dose because Monty was almost here. CRAP!!!
At this point, everyone was scrambling to get the room set up. The nurse was shocked at how quickly everything progressed, and within about five minutes, it seemed like there were about 15 people running around the room.
Here is everyone coming into the room, if you listen carefully you can here Matt screaming "Are those latex free gloves?"
It only took Dr. Franklin a few minutes to get into position, and first thing she said was "he has lots of hair"........I was so shocked!!! And I was soo excited that he had hair, it was probably odd to her, but during the laboring process I just kept saying "I can't believe he has hair" over and over again. I had already assumed that any baby made between myself and Matt would be bald (you should see my hat collection for Monty). Montgomery having hair was the best surprise out of this whole experience - funny how little things can make you so happy.
3:30 - 4:47 PM
You would think that after I dilated so quickly that Monty would have just slid right out, instead he decided to take a break, and that he was just going to stay in a little while longer. I pushed for about an hour, of which we discovered that Monty was coming out face up instead of face down and that he was just a little too big for mommy. They ended up using a suction to try and get him out (which failed miserably), I got an episiotomy, and then after more pushing and his final arrival - I was the lucky winner of a level 4 tear that went all the way down and through 3/4 of my hole #2. Ouch!!! I was very close to getting a c-section, but was lucky enough that my doctor stuck it out with me a little longer and Monty was able to come naturally.
The nurse on the left was AMAZING, I honestly don't think I would have made it without her!
Thank You Amy!!! Dr. Franklin is of course on the right and is much appreciated as well!
4:47 PM
Monty was here!!!! Yay!!!! Wahoo!!!! Happy Birthday Montgomery Alexander Facas!!!
8 pounds 7.5 ounces - 22 inches long
Monty Getting Cleaned Up!!! He looks like an angel to me!!!
22 inches long
His foot prints look huge to me!
I'm a big boy!
After a bath.....Monty is 1 day old here
Going Home......
My only complaint........I went through the process to get the epidural, and then ended up going naturally (well I had a super low dose), with just local anesthetic used to help alleviate the pain down there during the birth. They kept telling me how great it was that I was able to go naturally whilst being induced - at the time I wasn't very happy with the situation and I of course really wanted relief. But now I know that if I go naturally that I can totally handle the pain and that it will go quickly.
The End.
I love birth stories! He's perfect! Congratulations Becky!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry things didn't go as planned, but I'm glad everyone is healthy! I actually had a similar experience with Caleb with the tearing and use of suction. I had a level 4 tear too, but I tore, I didn't get an episiotomy. The recovery was so awful! I hope you heal much quicker than I did.
It's good that you know you can handle the pain of going naturally because the healing process was so amazingly easy with Ana. I only took one Motrin right after and I really didn't even need that. I did tear a tiny bit because of the tear from Caleb, but it wasn't bad at all.
I hope the next one comes out head first! I didn't think they even let babies come out butt first anymore!
Oh, I guess I should have said "Face Up" instead of "Head Up".......he came head first, his head was just facing the wrong way which makes it almost impossible for the baby to get past the pelvic bone.
ReplyDeleteAnd Thanks!!! All that hard work has finally paid off, and I get to hold a sweet baby boy.
